About Zantac Medication

Zantac is a medicine used in the treatment of heartburn and gastroesophageal reflux disease, which can induce symptoms such as heartburn, acid reflux reaching the mouth and throat and feelings of discomfort during the swallowing. It works by inhibiting the production of acid in the stomach. The drug available in tablet and syrup is produced by GlaxoSmithKline laboratory.

The main ingredient of Zantac is a drug called Ranitidine, which is an H2 receptor agonist. The acid is produced when histamine binds to these receptors, which are found in the lining of the stomach. These acids can then go up to the throat and cause heartburn. Ranitidine interrupts this connection by blocking histamine, which reduces the amount of acid produced and prevents heartburn.

Uses of Zantac

Zantac is used to treat intestinal ulcers and stomach and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). This medication is also used to heal the lesions caused by acid to the lining of the esophagus (the tube that connects your mouth to your stomach). It is also used to treat conditions such as excessive acid production by the stomach, including a very rare syndrome called Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Ranitidine belongs to a class of drugs called histamine receptor antagonists.

Zantac Dosage

Before taking this treatment, read the instructions carefully and follow the doctor's instructions. This is essential to maximize the effectiveness of this product and reduce the likelihood of side effects.

Use zantac as shown below:

  • For the standard tablet: The recommended starting dose in most cases is one 150 mg tablet, twice daily for a period determined by a practitioner.
  • For those who have severe symptoms or have not found a lower dose, a higher dose may be prescribed.
  • The doses should be spaced, ideally by a gap of at least 12 hours.
  • Swallow the tablets whole with water.
  • For syrup: In most cases, the recommended starting dose will be two tablespoons of 5 ml, twice a day.

A doctor may adjust the dosage, if oesophageal damage is present, or if the symptoms have not been adequately treated by the lower dose.

These doses should ideally be taken at 12-hour intervals.

If you use zantac together with antibiotics to treat an infection or ulcer, the dose may be different.

  • Do not exceed the prescribed dose.
  • If you forget to take it, you can do it if the next time is not close. If so, skip the dose you missed and continue the treatment normally. Do not take a double dose in one take to make up for it.

The above is just a guide. More detailed instructions can be found in the provided instructions.
