About Prevacid

Prevacid is a drug belonging to the class of proton pump inhibitors or PPIs. It contains lansoprazole which decreases the amount of stomach acid produced and secreted by the stomach. Prevacid is also used for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

Lansoprazole, used in Prevacid, is a pharmacologically classified proton pump inhibitor in the same category as omeprazole. Lansoprazole is a racemate, that is, it is a mixture of dexlansoprazole and levolansoprazole.

These include various ulcers of the digestive system (stomach, intestines, duodenum, etc.), esophagus caused by stomach acid, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Contrary to common belief, Prevacid is not effective at immediately relieving symptoms of heartburn.

Prevacid Drug Interactions

Prevacid can be harmful if used with certain other drugs. For example, sucralfate should not be used concomitantly with Prevacid as it makes it more difficult for the body to absorb Prevacid.

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) reduce the absorption of antifungals such as ketoconazole and itraconazole and may increase plasma levels of Digoxin. Prevacid also increases the risk of toxicity by increasing the plasma concentrations of Cilostazol. Absorption of lansoprazole may be reduced.

  • Dulcolax (bisacodyl)

The above, however, is not an exclusive list and there are other drugs that should not be used simultaneously and at the same time with Prevacid.
