About Lisinopril

Lisinopril is a medicine to treat hypertension and related diseases. Lisinopril is the generic form of the branded drug Zestril, a drug prescribed to treat high blood pressure. Doctors also prescribe lisinopril in combination with other medicines to treat congestive heart failure. Lisinopril belongs to the class of drugs called angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors, or ACE inhibitors.

It works by expanding the blood vessels, which allows the blood to circulate more easily and allows the heart to function more efficiently. By lowering blood pressure, lisinopril also helps reduce the risk of stroke and heart attacks. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the first phase of lisinopril in 1987. The pharmaceutical company Merck developed lisinopril under the brand name Prinivil. In 2002, as a result of this, the FDA approved generic lisinopril and authorized its entry into the medical market.

Uses of Generic Lisinopril

Lisinopril is used to treat hypertension. Lowering blood pressure helps prevent strokes, heart attacks and kidney problems. It is also used to treat heart failure, to improve survival after a heart attack. Lisinopril is an ACE inhibitor and works by relaxing the blood vessels so that blood can circulate more easily.

Lisinopril Dosage

Take this medicine orally with or without food as directed by the doctor, usually once a day. If using the liquid form of this medication, shake the bottle well before each dose. Measure the dose carefully using a special measuring device. Do not use a kitchen spoon because you may not get the exact dose. For children, the dose is also based on weight. Use this medication regularly to get the most benefit. It is important to continue taking this medicine even if you are feeling well. When it comes to treating heart failure, it can take weeks or months before you get the full benefit of this medicine. Tell your doctor if your condition does not improve or if it deteriorates.
