Accutane is used all over the world to treat various forms of cystic acne. Accutane is a trademark of Roche Laboratories.
Accutane (isotretinoin) is mainly used as a treatment for severe acne. The most common side effects are a transient worsening of acne (lasting 2-3 weeks), dry lips (cheilitis), dry and fragile skin, and increased sensitivity to sunburn. Uncommon and rare side effects include muscle pain, myalgia and headache. Isotretinoin is known to cause birth defects due to in utero exposure because of the close resemblance of the molecule to retinoic acid, a natural vitamin A derivative that controls normal embryonic development.
